What to do when your child is sick

Nothing agitates more for a parent than to find their child sick. Even the slightest fever would make a parent very worrisome and afraid for the well-being of their sick kids. When my first child was born I had no idea of how my world would turn around every time he got sick. There are many questions I want answered and I wish I could trade places with my sick child.

Fever in children is oftentimes a manifestation of a much greater ailment such as pneumonia, dengue or urinary tract infections; and I have learned that the earlier the discovery of its cause, the less stress it could have on both the child and the parent.

With this let me share with the things you should do when your child is sick.

At the first sign of fever seek the medical advice of a pediatrician

As I have mentioned fever can be a manifestation of something else, therefore you should know what it is by consulting a pediatrician. In my experience, among the triggers of fever are pneumonia, dengue and urinary tract infection. The first two are very dangerous if not treated right away so I advice that you have your child checked-up when he/she has fever.

Learn the symptoms and know their initial medications

Though pediatricians are specialist when it comes to dealing with child sickness, parents should also learn the things they need to do to assuage the condition of their sick child. A parent must learn initial treatment for certain symptoms of sickness. For instance, if your child has fever, paracetamol drops or syrup should be given to help fight the rising body temperature; or in case of diarrhea, water or over the counter dehydration drinks like Pedialyte should be given to prevent further lose of body fluids; or if there are instances of breathing difficulties,  a nebulizer should always be available.

Remember, by knowing the methods of initial treatment, you’ll prevent the sickness from getting worse.

Strictly implement the prescribed medication

Children, especially those who are under the age of four, are oftentimes very hard to give oral medications. One major reason is that they don’t like the taste of syrups given to them. While this may pose a problem, we have to find a way to put such treatment into their system. When all else fails there’s no other choice but to force them. I find using drops to be less messy.

Prevention is always better than cure

It is not enough to have your child cured of the sickness it has contracted, knowing its cause will save you further stress in the future. Practice sanitation with your children; keep your area clean so that germs would have less opportunity to do damage. Also, since children are very active they sweat a lot, so always make it sure not to let such sweat dry on their bodies, have a towel, baby powder and extra clothes available. Lastly, when going outside, application of insect repellants will prevent those sickness-carrying mosquitoes at bay.

Our children are one of our most important blessings in life; let’s do our best to keep them safe and healthy.
