Greetings my valued readers. This interesting post contributed by a fellow blogger Lloyd Burrell is very helpful for those who are struggling to work from home. I hope you’ll assimilate the wisdom herein–you’ll learn a lot.
I’ve been working from my home office for over 10 years. For me, it has been nothing short of wonderful, though it has taken a few tweaks to achieve this . The relief from stress is amazing, and I can spend more time with my family.
The transition period between working for someone else, and working for myself in my own home, wasn’t especially smooth sailing at first. There are some “obvious” mistakes you can avoid. Below are some tips to make the transition as smooth as possible, if you are thinking of taking the leap.
It’s always a good idea to prepare your next nest, before you settle into it. You may have feelings of remorse at having left a steady job, or on the other hand — you may be very happy to let go of the old life. Needless to say, just take your time with your new home office space and you’ll settle in very easily. There’s something to be said for the old saying, feather your nest. We’re not talking about adding oodles of luxuries, or tons of equipment. Surround yourself with a few nice pieces because you’ll be working around them for many hours a day. Practice patience during this particular time period, because you working at home all day may be a strain on the family also.
Do you Have All of Your supplies?
If you can afford it, the purchase of a new computer and perhaps one of those all-in-one printer/scanner/copier machines will help you to settle right in. A few things from your old office should be placed where you can see them. This applies to any personal photos, favorite mug, or even that crummy-looking plant which you had taken into the office years ago, but which has managed to survive (against all odds) all of that time. Maybe now, with a bit of extra loving, the plant will thrive on your new and exuberant and independent spirit.
What About the Family?
There should be designated work hours for you, even if you are in a home office. If everyone keeps on visiting and chatting for hours, then you’ll never get any work done. Because the situation is also new, this will probably die off after a few days. You can settle in and get your projects in order ready to start in on them. I’m assuming that you have already gotten a new e-mail address, or have one already established for home use. As you will be using this for business contacts and clients, do make sure that is not some e-mail address which sounds plain goofy! Even such a simple thing can be really off-putting when someone reads your e-mail. A genuine contact may simply dump your e-mail into the spam folder, and forget about it.
Make The New Space Your Own
Two important pieces of office furniture are your desk and office chair. If you’ve been getting by with a beat-up old kitchen table and a chair which moves across the floor like an arthritic turtle, then perhaps it’s time to get yourself set up with the two most useful pieces of office equipment ever invented. You must have a good place to put your computer, your phone, sometimes your elbows, and even your head — should you feel the need to take a nap. If space is limited then a corner computer office desk is a good choice, if you have a larger room then an l shaped office desk will give you abundant desktop space and storage. Any office chair you use for several hours a day, should also be well made and as comfortable as possible. You can add an occasional chair, a bright cushion, perhaps a filing cabinet, and several bookshelves installed on to the wall. The colors on your office walls should be soothing, and you can consider repainting them if necessary.
Miscellaneous Bits and Pieces
You may find that you’re holding your breath as you enter your totally-at-home office for the first time. There will be ups and downs, and some days you might be depressed, but others will be filled with jubilation. There can be times when having your own home office is the most wonderful thing, second only to being around your family. At other times, you’ll find yourself pulling out all of the papers in your filing cabinet and throwing them up in the air in disgust.
There’s always an option, because you’re at home, of breaking off a piece of wonderful cheese, pouring a glass of delicious red wine (or fresh lemonade), then going outside to the veranda and watching the sunset.

If you go to work in your home, you must have seen that the most important thing that you need it, self-discipline. Because, when you’re at home all day, very easy to go from home to work and work to home. And to keep the border is that you need a lot of self-discipline. It seems to me very important.

I love the idea of working at home. Somehow it makes family more closer than working at the office. It is true that there is a transition period but I guess it was easy for me to adapt being freelancer than to be a full time teacher. Thanks for the interesting post.

I love this post, I hope to one day be able to work from home, if I was asked what i wanted to do then I would say that working from home for myself would be top of the list by far. If i was offered the job of a pop star or to work from home it would be a no brainer.
I am setting up my own business at the moment but its hard work, hopefully I will get there eventually.
As I am single with no family the appeal is that i would be able to break some of your rules, I would not need to dedicate work hours, I could drift – I could also drift with regards to the place in the home I worked…… One day…. I hope!
