We have heard of it many times and have witnessed some of its casualties, yet it never sink on our consciousness until it’s too late—the bad habit that we unknowingly incorporate in our lifestyle that greatly compromises our health and well-being.
Although we may find such precarious habits very satisfying, we have overlooked at the irreversible consequences it may have on our mind and bodies.
Let us look at some of them:
Binging on processed and fast foods
Does your eating habit circle around fast foods and processed foods? If so then you have to reconsider. Fast foods, as well as processed foods commonly contain harmful substances that are very detrimental to our health. Here are among the notorious:
Trans fats – these are synthetically produced fats used to enhance the flavor, texture and shelf life of various processed foods. They increase the risk of developing coronary artery disease, diabetes and even sudden cardiac death.
Bad cholesterol – too much in our system will narrow our artery walls thereby causing stroke should there be a sudden raise in blood pressure.
Preservatives – can cause allergies, high blood pressure, kidney failure and even heart attack.
So the next time you go to your favorite fast food chain, or shop for your favorite processed edibles think of how it is slowly killing the healthy state of your body.
Frequent alcohol swig
Alcohol consumption is good if taken in moderation, but if you drink till you drop then it can take its toll primarily on your liver. Frequent alcohol swig can affect ones sanity and may lead to dependency. Also, alcohol-induced sensory impairment and jagged judgment are one of the leading causes of accidents. This reminded me of a news I once heard about a guy who went to a party and got out so drunk that he slept on the snow-blanketed street: he died of hypothermia.
Smoking
In these stressful times, smoking can be very soothing. The bad news though is that it will give you a slow and oftentimes painful end. Perhaps the image below will (I hope) give you an idea of what will happen to your lungs if you pursue the habit of smoking:

Physical inactivity
There have been many studies that confirm that physical inactivity contributes to obesity, diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, colon cancer, breast cancer, and premature death. While the convenience of our time is very tempting, we must remember that our bodies need physical activity in order to function properly. Studies show that having a regular moderate physical activity (i.e., walking, bicycling, swimming, etc.) can have the following benefits:
So if I were you, I would move my butt and go for a walk.
Reckless driving
Did you know that reckless driving is the number one killer of teens and young adults? And if you’re temperamental on the road, you can count yourself in. Let us all remember that the road is a very dangerous place to let go of our logic and reason (statistics are everywhere to prove this fact). Everything is moving fast and a slight mistake can cause very serious damage or even death. Never allow your negative emotions or hormonal impulses pass by your judgment on the road.
Harboring depression
A depressed person has a very high tendency to commit stupid things—like suicide. The lose of hope, the feeling of being alone, the perception of abandonment, and the sense of uselessness are among the factors that triggers depression.
Ok. Let’s face it. Life is depressing much of the time, but let us not allow ourselves to be habitually suffused by it. There are ways to counter depression and we must do our part to stay afloat.
Granted that the conditions of our circumstance shape us, our decisions play a big part in our overall stance in life. Habits are particularly the most predominant factor that molds our quality of life. What will happen then if the habit we chose is a threat to our well-being? Are we willing to face the consequences?
Keep this in mind: life at every moment are but choices, what we chose to do have its underlying pros and cons. Always go for the things that will enhance our well-being—not on those that will jeopardize it.
Finding it hard to even start with your goals?
Whether it’s breaking from poverty, getting your dream job, succeeding in business endeavors, losing weight, finding employment, getting a harmonious relationship, acquiring wealth and power, writing that bestselling book or any goals you want to materialize, there’s a force within you that will always inhibit you from achieving success. 99% of those who attempted with their goals fail, and the reason is their lack of knowledge about their very own participation in their failures. It’s sad but true that most people at least flirt with a few of these until they get some sort of wake up call! I wonder why most people don’t learn from blogs like this!

Great list, but I would have to add ingesting chemicals, whether they come from food additives, household products, vaccinations, prescription drugs – they damage your immune system and cause both short- and long-term problems.

You say “early conditioning causes us to fail” and this is certainly true. On the other hand, smoking, drinking and even overeating are often the result of addiction which can be very difficult to break. Where I do agree with you wholeheartedly is saying that by identifying the negative forces you can more easily overcome them. Self-knowledge really is power when it comes to motivation to succeed. Thanks for the great post.

What people don’t understand is that some people may have genetics that allows them to engage in these habits and “appear” to be doing okay. But first off, anyone with less than stellar genetics will be greatly negatively affected by these habits. Also, it is not just instant death that is the result of these habits, but a variety of health problems and aging issues that occur over time. And we don’t what greater condition of health and mind people with better genetics would be in without doing these bad habits as well.
