Oftentimes, we have been foolish enough to take for granted the things that really matters in life. Instead, we go for the shiny, fleeting and deceiving objects (and aspirations) that our society, culture, belief and early programming have inculcated upon us. Its no wonder we have never been satisfied no matter how much we acquire: we aspire wrong things!
We want fame and fortune; we want beauty and grace; we want power and control; we want domination over everything. But what comes after we acquire them?
Nothing!
All of the whims of the flesh and ego will lead to the corruption of the mind and spirit. Notice what happens to those people who are materially attached, they are depressed, substance addicts and thrill seekers. Yes, they may have lots of money, big houses, fancy cars, luxurious living and worshipped by many, yet behind the facade of glamour are disturbed people who are drowning in emptiness. No matter how much envy, admiration and idolization they get they are nothing more than displaced souls who have no direction in life. They have become slaves of the expectation of this world.
It has been the false presumption of many that having the material conveniences of life (as well as the satisfaction of the whims of our ego) are the things that makes our life worthwhile. While I may not deny that I have been a slave of this mentality, I find them deceiving in the end; it may satisfy me in the beginning, later I found myself chasing after the wind. The more I get the more I want, and the less I become satisfied.
But what are the things that matters in life?
Let me give you these things to ponder on:
The gift of each living moment
Don’t you realize the very BIG blessing of having to wake up each morning to experience yet another day of life? Imagine how we take this for granted. The gift of each living moment means:
having to see our loved ones and experience their presence
a chance to make a difference in our lives as well as of others’
opportunity for spiritual discovery
Some of us see each living moments of our lives as curse, but let us not allow our limited understanding to prevent us from thriving. Life is full of mysteries and possibilities, and everything happens for a reason. Let us trust that life has valuable lessons to teach, and have the faith that it’s for our own growth—not as a punishment.
The experience of love we receive
When death cast its shadow upon us, every wants and whims we once treasure becomes irrelevant. At those morbid moments we long for the love of the people close to our hearts: those whom we have loved and we have loved in return. Being loved fills the void in our souls; it’s the only thing that can accompany us when the world turns us down. It is unfortunate that we take for granted the people who gave us genuine love; it is only through our own adversity that we see its value.
The simple things that makes life possible
What are these simple things?
The healthy state of our bodies – think of how life would be if our health does not permit us from enjoying it.
To be able to do what we want – whether it’s for noble or ill purpose, it’s truly a gift to be able to exercise the power to do anything we set our minds into.
Freedom – life without freedom is not life at all
I’m sure deep within us we all know the things that really matters in life, the only problem is that we take them for granted. Let us not allow the deceiving glitters of materialism and pride blind us from treasuring what needs to be treasured in life; sad indeed for those who find it too late.
Finding it hard to even start with your goals?

Brilliant Post.
There is so much of this around each day. Sport – you win the cup and then what, it just repeats over for the next year? There’s been emphasis put on, ‘the end is having everything’ which is wrong.
Really a thought provoking article.
Things you have mentioned are true as we truly take the blessed things for granted and always run behind materialistic things.
I feel in any time of life we should never forget the things we are blessed with and infact should take those things as our motivation in out bad times and move ahead in life.

My answer to this question is FRUSTRATION. Living a peaceful and happy life is more important than fame and fortune, beauty and grace.
