A lesson in goal-getting: How did I lose belly fat

Eliminating belly fat has been one of the major concerns of many people, and this is the reason why many are being conned into buying commercialized ways and means of how to get rid of belly fat. There are those belly fat exercise machines or burn belly supplements over which desperate individuals purchase with the belief that it will work. Never did these people realize that the secret to eliminating their fat bellies lies within their minds, and such is why I have written about this subject.

I was imbued with an ectomorph body type (which means I’m skinny); and though the genetic composition of my body has given me the advantage of leanness, it did not spared me from accumulating belly fat. As I age, my belly has become more prone to fat deposits, making me look awkward by having a slim body with a protruding belly. I tried to eliminate it through exercises like sit-ups and crunches—but nothing worked. One day I realized that I might be doing the wrong approach: and boy I was right about this. My ignorance lead me to believe that exercise alone would suffice; it is only through a series of disappointments that I’ve learned that the knowledge I’ve acquired was lacking.

In any goal we want achieved, it is extremely important to know if what we’re doing leads us to where we want. Sure we will acquire the necessary knowledge—mostly from authorities—to help us in our pursuit, but it alone will not guarantee our success; the most reliable asset we can ever have is the lesson we chose to acquire from the application of such knowing—because from there evolves a much reliable information that will help us in achieving our goals. Every knowledge acquired we should test ourselves, pick up the aspects that works and discard the rest. It has been the error of many to rely solely on the recommendations of authorities, without even being mindful of its applicability and effectiveness.

Going back to losing my stubborn belly fat, I have learned that diet is very crucial. In fact, proper dieting alone will eliminate the unwanted fats in my body without the need of exercise. Though I learned it from a trusted expert, I need to test it myself, and so I did. I find it effective; however there are things that I need to compromise—good stuff mostly—in order to make it lasting. Unwilling to make the sacrifice, I have learned to find ways to tweak it a little. From this I stumbled upon the benefits of green tea, protein and oatmeal in burning fat. Based on these findings I have formulated my own strategy of burning my belly fat without being too strict in my diet.

Many we have learned—from outside sources—on how to achieve our goals; but it’s a mystery only few succeed. In winning our goals, we must commit ourselves into finding what works and what does not. If we keep on doing the things we believe is effective—despite the result being to the contrary, we won’t succeed in any way. Remember that what works for others does not necessarily means it will also work for us. There may be certain conditions that may not apply to us and so we must learn to find ways to fill such gap, and thus, trial and error is the most effective method in doing this.

Successful people have evolved as they are from their errors; they also understood that achieving one’s goal comes through trial and error. We have within us all the capacity to formulate our own success; what we need is to break ourselves from the status quo, make our own testing and analysis, apply what we have deduced then finally adapt. As we do these, a whole new path will be revealed to us—a more reliable roadmap which will bring us closer into realizing our goals.

We are all bestowed with intellect to aid us in acquiring what we aspire in life. Why are we too lazy—if not afraid—to use it? Are you?

It’s inspiring to hear you achieve your goal of losing belly fat. For me, my main goal is finding a mate, and developing myself in the area of love. It doesn’t require much intellect, I just need the motivation to go out there and take chances, but it’s hard when you’ve experienced so much disappointment =(

Disappointments will always be part of any goal-getting endeavors. Learn from it instead of brooding or harboring fear. It is only through perseverance that you’ll achieve anything you aspire in life. :-)

  5. Hi Walter,

First of all, congratulations on losing your belly fat!

I like the fact that you mentioned that what worked for you may not work for others. Very true! And like you beautifully put, “we are all bestowed with intellect to aid us in acquiring what we aspire in life.”

I think people just don’t try to listen to that intellect from within, and try to find the answers from others because they do not trust that they themselves have the answers.

    Cheers,

Thanks Mark. Sometimes I wonder why people try to copy the methods of other in achieving success. Don’t they realize that our conditions in life are different? This is the reason we need to know what works for us, and not just imitate the method of others. :-)

Good advice Walter, having information about losing belly fat is one thing, but the method needs to be something we can adapt and keep as a lifestyle choice. I have no problem with belly fat, but my method for losing it isn’t for many people. I run marathons. ;-)

Running does eliminate fat, but to get a six-pack, old-fashioned sit-ups, crunches and press-ups work fine.

    Hi Walter,

You hit this right on the head. Diet is a HUGE factor. It’s sad that people fall into the trap of looking for the next magic pill. We all should know that the right mixture of exercise and diet is the best way to achieve results, and that mixture is different for everyone (I agree whole-heartedly with your assessment of testing).

I realized that my eating habits were horrible, and once I adjusted (eliminating fast food, processed food, sugar, etc) I began to feel more alive. The ‘side effect’ of losing weight/belly fat was a pleasant happening.

Now I have hired a trainer to keep me on track with my workouts and hope to get back to actually feeling stronger like I remember when I was in high school.

    Enjoy the journey!
