Have you hug them lately?

Since our birth, these people have taken care of us. Despite our stubbornness, ignorance and unruliness, they have been patient with us. Love was all they have for us no matter what we do.

How can we ever be without our parents?

But as soon as we have gained independence we slowly take for granted their love and sacrifices. As the child becomes the parent and the parent becomes the child, we become stiff with our display of affection. Instead of showing consideration for their mistakes, ignorance and shortcomings we are fast with our tempers. Unlike their display of understanding during the time of our innocence, we become judgmental and oblivious of their feelings.

Let us show affection for our parents. Without their love and nurturance we would not be where we are today. Let us extend our gratitude while they are still capable of appreciating. There is much regret in finding ourselves too late in expressing our love for our parents; time will wither their age and deteriorate their health, and soon we will find them reduced to a helpless child needing care, love and attention.

Never should we forget the ceaseless love our parents have clocked upon us, especially during the times when we need them the most. It’s the most genuine love one can ever have in life.

As I depart I urge you to watch this short video. This will sink in your heart.

Thank you Lani. Time indeed goes fast and we’ll never know until when we’ll have our parents; it’s important that we show them love as long as they can still appreciate. :-)

I have been spending more time with my parents this year. I realized that while I espoused about the need to love others on my site, I really needed to start with my own family first. My parents might have different beliefs or ways of doing things; however, their intent had always been one of concern for my well-being. Thank you for the beautiful reminder on showing love, care and concern for our parents!!

  8. Hey Walter,

Yes, I am struggling with this right now. My 84 yr old father is fighting for a few more days in his battle with cancer.

I hate to see him go like this and your post reminds me to consider his investment in me rather than focus on his exit.

    Thanks pal.

  9. Walter,

I am unable to see the video somehow on my laptop.

Since becoming a parent myself, I understand my parent much more and feel their love and little things they do now. I appreciate everything they have done and are doing for me. And yes, I have hugged them and told them I love them and I do. Nice message for others time I may forget.

hi walter. being a parent to two kids makes me wonder how my mom handled and raised 5 kids almost all by herself. now, i am too busy with my 2 kids that i tend to neglect my mom who is now 76 years old and battling with arthritis, high blood pressure, poor eyesight and hearing, and forgetfulness. thank you for making me realize the greatness of my mom’s love.
