The most worthy investment in life: Self awareness

The concept of investment has been oftentimes associated with material gains. I find it erroneous the practice of many to invest most of their time and energy in pursuing the misleading wisdom of this world. Many believe that investing on the methods of worldly success is the most worthy goal one can pursue. We live our life aspiring for the comforts of the senses while altogether forget how temporary are we in this life.

Conventional wisdom has taught us to invest on things like family, education, career and other factors leading to a secured and satisfying life. While it is not my intention to belittle the importance of the above-mentioned facts, I find them lacking: for when they are all satisfied, emptiness sets in. The aspect of the Self has been abandoned in favor of our obligation with nature to which we are subjugated: we need to invest on our families to ensure the furtherance of our kind, we need to invest on our education and career so that we can have a social edge. If we look closely however, those needs are but the manifestation of our instincts which are common to all animals. The problem with confining our investments solely on the physical realm is that it yields nothing to further our understanding of what is beyond our fragile form.

What then is the most worthy investment in life?

An important wisdom I have learned in life is that the moment we were born our death has already been set. Therefore at any time, whether we like it or not, we will leave this life—irrespective of where we are, what we are and what we do. If we focus our whole life investing on the material and instinctive satisfaction of our existence, what will become of the person deep within us? What will we become of us after we emancipate from our physical form? Surely, everything in this world we cannot carry once we depart, everything except one: the awareness of what we are far beyond the perception of our limited senses.

It is then that I realized that we need to invest on self awareness. Sounds philosophical you may think but I believe that the matter of the Self is the only thing that remains long after the body is gone.

Perhaps many will not accept the fact that despite the intellect of man, we are all but low creatures of this world. Sometimes we question the cruelty of this world yet we don’t understand that such cruelty is also the law governing all of creation. There is however one distinction that elevates us from everything else, and such is our capacity for awareness. But it is unfortunate that despite our belief that we practice awareness, we do not most of the time. Our actions are still controlled by our instincts which are inherent of us being animals. When someone slaps you in the face it is your instinct to retaliate; when someone trespasses your space instinct tells you to defend it. These are just some example we automatically do without our consent. Thus, our bodies often act without our knowing.

By investing on self awareness, we would be able to elevate ourselves from our limited mind to explore the deeper aspects of our Self. You may call it personal development or spiritual growth or inner journey, yet the context is the same—awareness of ones’ self. The more we practice awareness in our everyday life, the more we will discover how we are being manipulated by our minds. Once we emancipate from the clasp of our instincts, we would able to see life in a different light, one which transgresses the limitation set forth by our limited minds.

It is through self-awareness that we will be able to learn the true nature of love, the wisdom of forgiving, the secret of success, self mastery, humility, and most of all the realization of the Divine.

As we go on shaping our destiny, let us remember that life is uncertain. While we pursue the important investments that will further our well-being in this world, let us make an effort to look beyond the physical aspect of our existence. A verse in the Bible says that we should first seek the kingdom of God, and by that it means the exploration our true divine selves; and such would be impossible without first mastering self awareness.

While the mind occupies itself understanding the reason for everything, our true self already knows. We just need to find it deep within us. Once our inner self becomes aware, we will see our oneness with everything.

“Only by much searching and mining are gold and diamonds obtained, and man can find every truth connected with his being if he will dig deep into the mine of his soul.”

~~ James Allen

Reading your article the verse you spoke of Matthew 6:33 came to mind, and as I got to the end I see you quoted it. I truly believe when you put the focus on something hire than self and on Him everything falls into place. I guess it all depends on what you have been exposed to in life and what you believe. Good post.

  2. Very well said, Walter!

Self awareness is a total that we can use which infuses all aspects of our life. Many people want to be successful in business…yet they ignore the fact that those who are really successful often have self-awareness.

Unfortunately, self awareness has gotten a bad rap due to the amount of self-help books and personal development books. Self awareness is a tool that we all can use to have a life that we love.

    Great job, Walter!

I’m very glad you’re back Nadia. Truly, self awareness is the first thing we need in order to grasp the complexity life. Without being aware of one’s self we have denied our self of the opportunity to discover our true nature. :-)

Excellent article Walter! I found it to be very thought provoking and I enjoyed reading it.

It reminded me of a quote by Aldous Huxley: ” There is only one corner of the universe you can be certain of improving, and that’s your own self.”

    Hi Walter,
This is a very thought provoking article. As I read it, I begin to think about things that I have questions about that have happened in my life.

You go on to mention how we should “Seek ye first the Kingdom of God.” What really hit home is that all of our questions can be answered just by looking within and being aware of ourselves.

Interesting piece and I’m glad you stopped by my blog and left a comment. I enjoy your blog already! :)

    Take care,

I’m glad you have appreciated this piece Sibyl. It really is easy to loose our focus with the glitters of our material existence. Wise indeed are those who focus on the inner self–the only thing that will remain when everything perishes. :-)

  10. Walter,
You are preaching to the choir on this one! I totally agree that our investment in our self, our awareness, our growth is the best one that we can make. This is true from a selfish perspective as well as a more magnanimous one. The more we grow and heal and develop, the more we have to contribute to our loved ones, our community and the world.
Thanks so much for sharing this,

  11. Self awareness is the cornerstone of many spiritual philosophies and even ones that don’t specifically follow a religious path. I personally believe that societies need to work more toward the greater good than fighting with each other over resources, ideologies and such. Inspiring article.

I think this definitely ties into self-monitoring, too. I’ve been learning about how people self-monitor themselves and whether or not they are high self-monitoring or low and it’s very important. Definitely affects the way you communicate.

  13. Hi Walter,

Very wonderful and insightful read. Lao Tzu once said “He who knows others is wise. He who knows himself is enlightened.” I agree with you that there’s no other thing in this life that is worth investing that to know oneself.

    Hi Walter,

Your post is very thought provoking and while it mentions everything that I’ve read or heard at one time or another already in some form it was good to read it.

In our busy lives it is all too easy to get bogged down in only the temporary values and activities that help in obtaining them.

Taking time to reflect on the deeper things in life is really important and when done it actually makes the ever present physical struggle easier.

  15. Hi Walter! Beautiful post! Self-awareness is an essential component for growth. It’s definitely worthy to invest in our selves. If we don’t, who will.

The “exploration our true divine selves” is our ultimate goal, if we are lucky. Thanks for the reminder.

    Loving blessings!

    Hi Walter,

I am in total agreement with you, almost over-agreement! Ultimately, the only thing worth investing in is your true nature, and that starts with your awareness.

Our life is to be enjoyed and experienced of course, (I am not an advocate of denial) but as the forms come and go, the great opportunity to discover your own eternal essence more and more deeply in each moment is all too often forgotten.

    Thanks,

  17. Walter,

I agree and believe that a true investment in the betterment of the Self — self-exploration, which leads to self-awareness — is a major and important investment in the betterment of the lives of everyone around us :)

    All my best,

    Dave

  18. Susan G. says:

I definitely agree with you Walter. “…for when they are all satisfied, emptiness sets in.” This is such an empowering truth which people should meditate on. A lot of people believe that when they have satisfied all their external needs that they will eventually be complete. But that’s not the case. It’s actually at that point when you’ll see that something is still lacking.

  19. Tiffany says:

Your post sums up quite nicely, a man’s journey towards self-fulfillment, or to put it in Abraham Maslow’s words, “self-actualization”.

The thing is, successful men and women who have reached heights of power and wealth have embarked on a journey of self awareness although quite a lot have been consumed by their material wealth and status of power. It takes self awareness to reach your goals and even more self awareness to make sure you don’t lose yourself in the process of attaining it.
