Never give up

Defeated

Life is full of challenges. In every aspect of our endeavors we are made to choose between embracing and escaping the responsibilities or circumstances we need to face. But more often than not, we chose escape—it comes in many forms and the most common is by giving up.

Certain events do come when our spirits are put to the test. In the many struggles of life there are times when our level of tolerance are exceed; thus, the pain and suffering brought about by this experience pushes us to consider the lure of giving up. We have the false notion that by giving up, grace will release us from our miseries. Unfortunately, many have been shattered by this false belief.

In whatever circumstances we are in—be it in relationships, goal getting, pursuance of our aspiration and facing adversities—our will to hold on decides our triumph or defeat. Sadly, most of us are quick to give up. This weakness on our part has deprives us in discovering our hidden strengths. It is within us always the power to overcome any blows life can throw upon us.

Our tendency to resist the unfavorable events we experience in life results in bitterness. We need to understand that life is not all about complacency; that difficulties and adversities are necessities. Everything in this world is complementary, there’s no happiness without despair, there’s no peace without chaos and there’s no light without darkness. Growth cannot germinate without the experience of adversity, struggle and hopelessness. One can only discover his hidden power by courageously facing every test the come his way.

All of us aspire to achieve something worthwhile in our lives. For some, it could be material success, for others it may be intangible achievements, still for the unfortunate the opportunity to live a normal life. But for every road to triumph, the path is never without a hindrance. The more encounters we have with these hindrances, the more physical and emotional pummeling we receive. If we don’t have will and tenacity as our weapons, we are sure to fall easily.

What will happen then if we take the route of courage and persistence?

We can do the impossible.

The more we hold on, the more opportunities are revealed to bring us closer to achieving our goals. If we give up easily, those opportunities are wasted. Successful people are well aware of this fact; hence, common is their attitude of staunchness—they know it is the secret to achieving and enduring everything.

Hi Walter, thanks for this inspiring article and video. I think when we are faced with obstacles, mistakes, and failures, we have two options.

One is to give up and let our obstacles overcome, causing our journey to end. The other one is to stand up and try, try, and try again until we find the opportunity to continue with our journey.

Napoleon Hill once said, “Every adversity, every failure and every heartache carries with it the Seed of an equivalent or a greater Benefit”.

If we go through life’s obstacles and see them as challenges that contain benefits; with enough courage and persistence, one day we will be able to accomplish our goals and gain those benefits of being able to overcome the obstacles that we have faced in the past.

How easy it is for us to give up. But never do we realize the hidden benefits we can gain and you have put it nicely in Napoleon Hill’s quote–by the way, he’s one of my favorite author.

I hope we should see all obstacles as challenges, just as you have eloquently stated. :-)

      Hulbert,
Thanks for posting that Napoleon Hill quote (it was the quote I used in my college year book)!

The new one I’ve been using as a reminder to not give up is “I will never let the resistance beat me” from the book “The War of Art” by Steven Pressfield…highly recommend.

It is so easy to forget about all the good things we have in our lives and just feel sorry for all that we don’t have.

A very nice article Walter. Thank you.

I think a lot of us give up through fear. That maybe fear of the unknown, the fear of failure or even the fear of not being loved by others as a result of our actions. Sadly fear holds a strong grip over a lot of people and the don’t have strategies to deal with those fears.

    • Walter says:

Fear have done us more harm than good. Until we wake up and see that fear holds nothing to alleviate our well-being, we will continue to lead a life of decay. :-)

    Hi Walter,

Very insightful post. Peristence is key. The persistence in your goal, really does stem from your purpose in life. If you are clear on what your Purpose here is on earth, otherwise known as your “why” You will have what it takes to push through the challenges, and stay persistent. Many people that don’t realize their goals were not very clear on their “purpose” in life to begin with. Excellent post.

Walter, thank you for visiting my website/blog at the foot of Mount Fuji, Japan. And thank you so much this inspirational post and video on a really important topic. Your entire post is so encouraging and I especially liked your insight that “difficulties and adversities are necessities.” They not only help us grow, they show us what we are and how we respond to the circumstances and events of our lives. Giving up is a response that we never need to make, as your post so powerfully and eloquently reminds us. So many of us have so much – our limbs, our health, our family and friends, our work, our possessions, and yet we complain so much about our lack and limitation. We forget that our breath, our spirit, our joy and our connection are here in overwhelming abundance every second that we are alive. Never give up, because life never gives up on us. Hi Walter -

I think one common trait you will find with ‘successful’ (I put that in quotes because success is relative) people is they have no issue with failing. Many might not see this, but the people who are not afraid of failure and who are not afraid of trying new things to accomplish what they want to accomplish end up leading successful lives as defined by the individual.

The video you provided in this post portrays this beautifully.

    Walter

I love life’s serendipities! Just last week this was in the forefront of my mind. Starting a new venture (website/blog) and lots of 15 hour workdays have been mostly wonderful. Yet there are those moments when things don’t go right and the joy can easily turn to frustration and overwhelm.

Your use of the word lure is so accurate to describe the temptation to give up. But I noticed something wonderful in myself – resilience! Each day I awaken ready and excited to do it all again – and for that I am grateful .

    Great article!

    • Walter says:

I’m glad you have discovered your resilience. It’s a very powerful weapon against the lure of giving up. Most of the time, when we work on our goals, our minds have the tendency to push us back to our comfort zones. When such happens, we stop pursuing our goals and relapse back to stagnation. It is important to remember that we can give ourselves a big advantage if we learn to master the virtue of resilience. :-)

Life is full of challenges. In every aspect of our endeavors we are made to choose between embracing and escaping the responsibilities or circumstances we need to face. But more often than not, we chose escape—it comes many forms and the most common is by giving up.”

The two words that just stood right out were “giving up”, I always feel this is such an easy route to take when you say you can’t do the impossible. I personally, and I know others can say as well that they are happy they challenge themselves to keep going and going through all the bad times to find the pot of gold at the end.

    • Walter says:

I believe that we can do anything we set our minds into. The only problem is that we are the one’s who sets our own limitations. By not giving up we can do the impossible. :-)

Hello Mr. Walter! Your sister-in-law, Nanette, introduced this site to me, and boy was I glad she did :) Told her, okay, will try this out, and i picked this blog as i feel this applies to me right now. This is always an issue for me, while i tend to hold on and be patient about things, i also always do tend to think about the very thin line between being patient, and being a fool. But after reading this, mayeb there is a thin line, but you’re right, maybe i sometimes just lack the courage to jump right back over the line :) i like this, very inspiring.

    • Walter says:

I’m glad to have provided you with some inspiration. The difficulties and challenges we face in life should be faced with patience, persistence and courage. Remember that things are not what they always seem. When our minds encounter unfavorable situations, it tends to beckon us back to our comfort zones. Little do we know that we are being led to our deterioration. Challenges in life makes us grow, by denying ourselves to face difficulties we are disallowing the manifestation of our inner strength. :-)

  43. Darryl says:

Very inspiring article Walter. It’s not always easy but we must find the strength to face our fears and the challenges that come our way. Only then will we be able to experience real triumph.

Many of us by default tend to take the easy way out or avoid facing challenges, in some cases we don’t even realize we’re doing it. After failing enough times though we all reach a breaking point where we have to make that ultimate decision, do I give up or do I tackle these personal barriers I have created and become the person I desire to be.
.-= Darryl´s last blog ..Stick To Your Goals No Matter What =-.

    • Walter says:

Thank you Darryl. Persistence and being strong is one thing, giving up is another. We will never know our our strength and capacity if we do not stand to the challenges we face. By giving up the mind is tricking us to return to our comfort zones. Of course, nothing will improve if we always aspire complacency. Face the difficulties and be still, then your true capability will be revealed. :-)
