This is a guest post from Bart Jacobs of wakeupandstartliving.com. It is his aspiration to guide people on their quest to find true happiness by writing about body, mind, and spirit.
The title of this post might confuse you at first. You may want to read it again. Does it strike a chord within you? Does it surprise you when I say that a lot of people are afraid of success? To tell you the truth, for a long time, I was afraid of success myself. It is a kind of fear most people don’t recognize as fear.
Does this scenario look familiar to you?
Fear of success feels like this:
Sam is in her late twenties, working as a junior consultant at a research firm, and single after recently breaking up with her boyfriend. She has taken off the week to work on the novel she’s been writing for the past several months. It will also give her some time to think about what’s next. Sam manages to make good progress on her novel during that week and this gives her some renewed confidence. What’s more, a few months later, she sends in her manuscript to several publishers. She is excited beyond words. Nobody as ever read a word of it. In fact, nobody knows she writes in her spare time.
Several publishers respond promptly, but the message is clear. It’s a no-go. Sam forgets about the novel and loses all her interest in writing.
Three months after submitting her manuscript, one of the publishers that initially rejected her manuscript contacts her with thrilling news. They want to publish her novel. Months go by during which Sam invests a lot of time in her novel. She is exhausted, but on top of the world. She’s living her dream, a published writer. During this time, a little voice in her head warns her that this story will not last. It never does. A year after submitting the manuscript, she passes a book store and see her novel on one of the shelves—an indescribable feeling.
Life really becomes a roller coaster. Interviews here, presentations there, excited friends and family. Her success starts to really scare her. Why is this happening to her? What has she done to deserve all this? Nothing seems to make her happy any more as the fear starts to overshadow all the joy and excitement. What has she done to deserve this success? Things must soon start to go wrong again. They always do. To be continued.
Although the story is unusual and slightly exaggerated, it is perfect to make my point. Do you recognize the pattern and the different emotions? Have you had moments when you think “Why is this going so well?” and “Something must be wrong … in a good way.” This is when fear usually starts to creep in, overshadowing the initial joy and excitement with feelings of unease and discomfort.
What Happened?
If you have a moment in your life where you are flustered with what is happening to you emotionally, the best thing to do is to take a step back. It is like taking directions to a restaurant you’ve never been. All of a sudden, you realize you’re lost. The best thing to do is to retrace your steps up to the point that is familiar to you. How do you apply this to your life. Go back to the point where things were fine and all was well. At that point, you were still in your comfort zone, but you were definitely exploring its boundaries. The moment feelings of unease started to show up is the moment you started crossing the boundaries of your comfort zone. You were about to step out of your comfort zone.
Leaving Your Comfort Zone
You’ve heard it before, in order to grow, you have to leave your comfort zone every now and then. What’s more, your comfort zone isn’t necessarily the best place for you to be in. Granted, it feels like the best place for you to be in, because it gives a feeling of comfort and ease. It makes me sad when I meet people who are afraid of leaving their comfort zone even if they are being abused or taken advantage of. A comfort zone can and will limit you in life if you never look beyond its boundaries. Simply put, your comfort zone prevents you from growing.
This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t give yourself a break or that you constantly have to push yourself to grow and improve. Absolutely not! However, if you want to achieve goals or if you want to be successful at what you do, you will have to trade your comfort zone for a place that is … less comfortable. Don’t worry, this is only temporary. Compare it with moving to a new place to live. At first, your new home may feel scary and uncomfortable. However, if you give it some time, you will definitely start feeling at home.
What Should I Do?
This question has many answers. One tip I can give you is to observe your fear when it arises and see it as a guide to where you want to go, your goal. If you feel overwhelmed by success, no matter how small, take one step back and observe your situation. You will start to realize there’s nothing to be afraid of. Feel the fear in your body and it will disappear.
Another powerful method is meditation. Feel the fear during the meditation and observe it. Observe your mind and pay close attention to the comments it makes about your success. Observe how your mind triggers the fear by making your success look (and feel) like too much to handle.
Finally, something that always helps me is saying this little mantra “Everything is going to be all right.”. This is not a lie to make you feel better. No, it’s a powerful truth. As soon as you realize the true meaning of this mantra, life looks so much brighter.
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”

Being afraid because of tasting the first elements of a future success due to leaving the comfort zone is one part; the other is the people around that become afraid too and pass their fears to the one moving ahead.
If you are scared of moving forward but don’t want to be left behind then you could try to stop those attempting to advance so no changes could be perceived, then you are fine, you are safe.
So it is not only dealing with our own but also dealing with those around that cannot be discounted, like family and close friends.
It is about our AND their comfort zones because at the end of the day we are social critters anyway.

Absolutely. That is indeed an important aspect of success. In fact, having success in life can have quite some consequences, as you point out. Friends can even become envious of you, which can sometimes lead to losing some of those friends. Thanks for sharing your opinion. It is much appreciated!
.-= Bart Jacobs´s last blog ..Mind, Ego, And Meditation =-.
Thank you for such a brilliant and profound insights.
I like when you said, “Observe Your fear” For a very long time, I was always held within the walls of my comfort zone. Not really wanting to stretch out of it. Until I fully discovered the power of personal development and going to all the seminars. Just looking within for some answers. The questions even went back as far what you told us here, “Go back to the point where things were fine and all was well.”
I went to a wonderful seminar, Millionaire Mind Intensive with T. Harv Eker, the author of The Secrets of The Millionaire Mind. He has said that, “our comfort zone equals our money zone. In order to have more money in our lives, we must expand our comfort zone.” In a blog I read a few months ago, he states that, “I would add that our comfort zone equals our joy zone, our love zone, our fulfillment zone, our spiritual connection zone, you name it.”
So if you want more of anything in your life, the place to start is with your comfort zone.
By expanding your comfort zone you will get more of what you want.
From there, I just made goal list of what I can do to leave and expand my comfort zone. Everything I listed a goal and was able to accomplish it I checked it off and then I would celebrate. I would remind myself that“The world expands for those who expand the world”
Thanks for also mentioning “meditation” I have been very consistent with this for a long period of time. Something about being truly present and harmonizing with mind, body, emotions, and spirit BRINGS my soul to complete bliss.
‘The goal is to have one foot firmly planted in the physical and one foot firmly planted in the spiritual. Be as committed to reality as you are to the divine. Be as anchored in the literal as you are in the transcendental’
Thank You for this POST =)

Fear can be a good thing when used wisely and with the right intentions. You should never let fear guide you, however. Taking a step back from the new and regrouping what got you there and then taking a few more steps forward will help.
This is a great way of seeing and discovering new opportunities and finding what’s really out there.
If you always stay where you’re comfortable then you’re never going to learn how to be comfortable with your life.
.-= Eric´s last blog ..Real Or Robot =-.
Tanks for your comment, Eric. What do you mean by “You should never let fear guide you.”. Do you mean that don’t let fear limit you or do you mean that fear is there to show you where not to go?
.-= Bart Jacobs´s last blog ..Mind, Ego, And Meditation =-.
Hey Bart!
Thanks for the great post!
Being successful can be quite hard at first, as you point out.
Why?
We judge ourselves too much?
We have internalized the judgment of others?
We have not fully embraced ourselves for who we are?
I believe that this problem is a social phenomenon, more than a personal one. In other words, children are not born having a problem with success. This problem is the result of the world that grew up in.
If you have set your cap to the goal of real success, you also must take on this learned self-judgment. It really is the greatest barrier to success for most of us.
And overcoming this self-judgment may very well be the sweetest part of achievement!
Keep up the great work, Bart!
All the best,
Hugh
You point out several important points, Hugh. Overcoming the fear for success and stopping to judge yourself are admirable goals on their own. They will greatly improve the quality of your life and propel you to even bolder goals. As you say it, though, the taste of this victory is truly spectacular and makes you smile! Thanks for your comment.

Hi Bart,
Marianne Williamson is one of my heroes and that quote you used at the end, says it all.
I think many people are afraid to shine because they may feel that it is arrogant or they may be afraid about how their friends will react.
Often people are encouraged to play it small because it is safe. Many people view life as a very scary place with limited resources and that dreams cannot come true.
The reality is very opposite. Dreams do come true and we are capable of doing so much. There are no limits except the ones we place on ourselves. Anything in life is possible, we just have to believe it is so and go after our dreams.
We have heroes for a reason…they remind us of our potential if we simply will just aim to be the best we can be.

I have nothing to add to that, Nadia. You said it all! Life can sometimes be so overwhelming that we forget that we are indeed capable of accomplishing anything we want.
Just for the record, the quote was added by Walter. He deserves the credit .

It is funny that we are afraid of success. Perhaps it is because we are afraid that it will go away. Sometimes people don’t believe they are worthy of success on a deep level. Either way, it is important to take steps to face your fears and rise above yourself. Great Article! Thanks for sharing!
You’re absolutely right, Matt. Some people are afraid of success and happiness, because they literally think “It’s too good to be true.” and before they realize it, it’s gone. Thanks for stopping by, Matt.
.-= Bart´s last blog ..Mind, Ego, And Meditation =-.
This was a great article and something that I struggle with. When things are going well, my mind automatically thinks that it’s too good to be true and I expect something bad to happen.
I have to have faith that ‘everything is going to be all right’. Easy to say, but hard to do. I guess it will just take more practise
Karen
.-= Karen´s last blog ..Why It’s Never Too Late For Your Dreams To Come True =-.
Try to observe these thoughts, Karen. If you think “This is too good to be true.”, watch the thought and see it as what it truly is … a thought. That’s it. That thought does not have the power to make you feel unworthy of success and happiness, but only if you don’t believe the thought. It takes practice, but I can assure you that, after a while, it makes you smile when you notice that your mind is trying to pull your legg once again ;-). Thanks for your comment.
.-= Bart´s last blog ..Mind, Ego, And Meditation =-.
Fear of success and fear of failure are companions.
For example, Victoria Principal once said, “I am a success, and all I ask is that it not all be taken away.”
Surveys show that widows who have been left well off still fear that some day they will be destitute.
And, of course, the scenario you mention, always feeling as though, no matter how successful we are, some day we will fail.
The truth is that some day we will all fail. And on others we will succeed.
As human beings with a survival drive, fear of things happening which do not aid us in satisfying that drive are always going to be in the background.
That is just the human condition.
We football players who have won two or three games in a row cannot but wonder if the success we have enjoyed is deserved or if next week, some coach will figure out just how bad we are.
For example, Ted Williams was faced with a choice when Lou Boudreau put on the Williams shift.
Ted refused to bend, and he hit into countless outs fighting that shift.
Eventually he was able to adjust properly without “feeling” like he was taking away from his power, and the league stopped using the shift. But, for awhile there, even Ted Williams was afraid that his success was just an illusion.
Success/failure Night/Day Security/Insecurity Triumph/Defeat Completed Pass/Interception, all just one moment away.
The dynamic of those events, feelings and situations is what makes live thrilling.

.-= Bart´s last blog ..Mind, Ego, And Meditation =-.
I really enjoyed this post, and I can definetly realate to this. I have times where I personally feel like I’m doing very well with life, and sometimes I stop and think and worry about the others that I feel haven’t kept up with my success. It leaves me feeling rather helpless when I start thinking about the other people that weren’t growing or succeed at the level I was moving in. I am still in the process of learning this. Is there any other tip you can provide me with, as far as not worrying so much about the people I feel I have “left behind” in my advancement?
Thank you.
Baker
The answer lies in your question, Baker. Try not to worry too much. This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t care about the people you love, but don’t hold yourself back from success you deserve. I want to add to this that it is important to give. That is what I try to do with my blog. Especially when you are successful, it is time to give back (in my opinion). You’ll soon find out that if the people around you are happy, you’re happy as well!
Thank you this helps out a lot.
You’re welcome. Glad I could help.

Great post! I agree that it is vital that we get out of our comfort zones. We sometimes make “being comfortable” a goal in life. We think that accomplishing comfort is a good thing. The truth is when we park ourselves in our comfort zones we are really missing out on something better.
Thanks for the great insight.

Unbelievably true – you have hit the nail on the head. As human beings we are afraid of success but at the same time maybe too scared in the first place to try. It might be that you fear initially success but I think it depends on what kind of person you are. There are some that love to deal with success and love all of its shortcomings.
Then there are others, like the woman you mentioned in the article, that want to become successful but once they get there they feel overwhelmed.
.-= Julius Kuhn-Regnier´s last blog ..The Lost Art of Failure =-.
You’re right, Julius. In what category do you fit in?
.-= Bart Jacobs´s last blog ..Stop Caring What People Think: Best Practices =-.
hmm well personally I think completely different. I actually don’t like success in terms of making money. Of course I do want to make enough money to live a decent life and if I start to earn more then that’s fine too. I simply don’t like the idea of giving up a lot of freedom and time just to earn more money.
What’s yours?
Ultimately you will get to a point where you can’t spend all the money you have earned. And in the end you will realize that you have worked all your life for nothing because you have been too busy working and not caring about other people. After all money won’t count when you are dead and it won’t even make other people remember you.
That’s my point of view
.-= Julius Kuhn-Regnier´s last blog ..How to Handle Your Blog Like Real Estate =-.
I think we’re definitely on the same page, Julius. For me, success is not limited to making tons of money. If this were the case, I’d stick to my current job instead of pursuing my passions.
Success, however, has many faces. My blog, for example, is all about guiding people towards happiness as good as I can. In fact, I have no ads on my blog (only affiliate links to Amazon when I refer to a book), so money is no priority for me.
I’m really glad to hear that you’re at the point (or maybe you’ve always been there) that you know that money isn’t the only measure of success (and definitely not the ultimate measure of success). Thanks for sharing, Julius. I really appreciate this!

Hmm,
Learnt something that i will surely be applying. The content here is great.
One reason some of us fear failure is that we do not want to face competition from certain copycats and will rather sabotage our success.
Another reason is that we fear success will alienate not us from our peers but our peers from us due to their own insecurity that might result.
Lana (she blogs at dreamfollowers.com) talks about this in one of her posts (http://dreamfollowers.com/if-you-want-to-go-there-you-have-to-leave-here-first). Sometimes, in order to grow, we will have to leave people behind. The question is if you’d rather stay behind with them or take you life to the next level? Don’t get me wrong, I’m not only talking about money. I talk about any kind of success or growth, personally, spiritually, …
