When I started launching this blogsite I was full of enthusiasm. Everything was in place; I did my homework, honed my abilities, learned from the masters, read a lot. But alas! I have never prepared myself for that stumbling block that’s capable of destroying everything I have worked for—DISCOURAGEMENT!
Such is so powerful my mind is in constant battle with it. Despite my faith, tenacity, endurance and visions of success I’m am constantly caught off-guard by its self-defeating tentacles. No matter how much I learned about doing the right things, affecting the right attitudes and indifference to criticisms, I can’t seem to escape the nagging probability that I will somehow never make it! It’s a scary thought churning my complacency. How I’m I supposed to go through it?
The answer I learned is to: go against it! Let it lurk into your mind but don’t give it power over you.
Although it’s hard to escape from the threat of failure, one must understand that it is a state of mind. You always have that deep fear that you can never pull through, and the people around you will laugh and confirm your lack. Discouragement has effortlessly decapitated many would-be achievers. How easy it is for us to shrink from it. I don’t know how it came about either. Successful people I know never gave it some consideration—or at least they may have outgrown it.
As I’m writing this post, discouragement is playing a song on my mind, thundering the chorus: you can’t make it, you don’t have what it takes, all is in vain and it won’t work. These tunes keep playing but I have learned to go against it. In doing so I have written this post to prove to myself I’m the master of my fate.
It’s a miracle what one can do if he put his mind into it. Discouragement is only in the mind, actions are what affect our life; mere thoughts are harmless unless it be put into action. Discouragement should always be where it ought to be—in your thought alone and let it be void in your every actions: your mind will be conditioned until finally, it will influence no more.
Most of what happens in our life is the product of our choices. It resides in your hands whether to make life good or to make life bad. Think about it.
“Sure I am that this day we are masters of our fate, that the task which has been set before us is not above our strength; that its pangs and toils are not beyond my endurance. As long as we have faith in our own cause and an unconquerable will to win, victory will not be denied us.” – Winston Churchill
Ah! Living with life choices and the inner voices of discouragement… those voices can be deafening! Sometimes it’s a struggle to find the silence needed to even begin to accept the choices we’ve made!
You’re advice: “go against it!” is powerful! Thanks for the insight!
Fear of failure can be more destructive than failure itself. If you try, you may fail, or you may succeed. If you don’t try, then failure is assured.
As you’ve shown, writing about your self-doubts can be the key to eradicating them. By giving them voice, you release them and free your unconscious mind for more creative pursuits.
You have a beautiful writing style. I love it!
When I first started blogging, I was pretty discouraged and thought that no one would read my work. At times, I even felt as though I was just writing to myself, since others didn’t seem to be listening.
Now, everything is falling into place! I have a good group of readers, I’ve made friends with fellow bloggers, and I feel as though my work means something to someone else. It’s a great feeling, and I’m glad I didn’t quit blogging when it got tough in the past!
Overall, great article!
I share your experience. Although there are times I want to give up I kept the faith up. I held on the fact that I will make it.
Thank you very much for your kind observation on my writing style.
I’d have to say that it is not most of life that is a choice but it is all about choices.
There are some things you can choose (where you live, your profession, mate etc). Then there are things you cannot choose (where you were born, who your parents are, height etc).
But even if you have no say in the things you cannot choose, you still have the choice of how you can react to those things. That is the major determining factor in the way a person’s life turns out. It not about what happens to you but what you do about it.
Thanks for making me think.
You are truly right about choices. Many people are not aware of this. The few enlightened ones–like yourself–gets the best out of life.
Thank you very much for sharing your thoughts.
Failure is a good thing. It shows you where you went wrong and allows you to learn and grow from your mistakes.
Besides, you can only fail if you are actually ‘doing’ something. Not trying, not taking action, not moving forward, these are the real failures. Way to go for being a success.

[...] Conquering discouragement [...]
Hey Walter – Don’t be discouraged. What’s the worst that can happen? Tell yourself when you’re writing, that you’re writing for yourself. Some people will come and follow, some people won’t.
Write long enough, and I believe people will come if that is what you wish.
Best
Hi Walter,
I believe one should have fear of failure so that you can be cautious, from my point of view its an inbuilt Alert Mgmt system which makes people to get into details which will help them to win over things. But its equally important manage it effectively through our rational through process. If you actually see people who are confident are the one who have a strong belief on a subject than the others who compete for the same. So its important to know and believe in every aspect which we want to win.
Cheers

@Kabilan – Fear has benefits but oftentimes we misapply it.
